Why Megapixel Counts Fail to Measure Construction Camera Image Quality

Don’t be misled by labels.

4K 6K, 8K etc can be very misleading terms to describe the image quality of construction cameras.

For years we’ve seen many people describe cameras as 4K or 6K in trying to create an impression of image quality.

However, in simple terms, 4K means an image or video frame has roughly 4,000 horizontal pixels. 6K means roughly 6,000 horizontal pixels, etc. A 6K image at 3:2 aspect ratio would give 6,000 x 4,000 pixels, or 24 Mega Pixels……and you often hear that MP (Mega Pixel) count being lauded as some marker of quality too.

But simply counting pixels is no measure of image quality. What if those pixels are not very good, as is more often the case?

Hardware Limits of 4K and 6K Site Monitoring Sensors

Pixels have to be captured by a sensor, formed by a lens. They have to hold detail, colour, contrast, dynamic range and useful information. And that is where the difference really begins.

A 6K image captured through a small, lower-grade sensor and a basic fixed lens may contain a lot of pixels, but those pixels are often noisy, soft, distorted, over-sharpened, compressed or lacking in useful detail.

If the sensor is poor then your pixels will be poor. If the lens cannot resolve fine detail properly, the sensor is simply recording a weaker image anyway. Combine the two and then you get ‘the picture’…..albeit not a very good quality one (excuse the pun).
